Some would be shocked to read this from me, but I really need to get out more.  I watched the Academy Awards (known of course as the Oscars) last night, and realized I have not seen any of the nominated movies.  Not one single stinkin’ one of ‘em.  In fact, I’m ashamed to admit the last movie I actually viewed in a theater was Bruno, which was brutal. I guess I was suckered into it thinking it would be as entertaining as Borat (it wasn’t, trust me).  So, long story short, I need to expand my horizons and make an effort to take in a flick more often.  Lacking knowledge of the movie world, I was quite bored by the entire broadcast last night.  It all seems so “hoity-toity” to me, very self-righteous and stuffy.  All the Hollywood types slapping each other on the back and making very big deals out of themselves.  I know the show is hugely popular and viewed by a billion people worldwide.  I’m just out of the loop on the entire film industry.  Once again…gotta get out more.

I want to thank everyone who joined me at the Webster Police 1000 Club awards dinner Sat. night at Webster Golf Club.  I had the honor of being the Master of Ceremonies again, and I really enjoy the event every year.  Chief Pickering and his team do an excellent job for the the town where life is worth living.  The WPD proves how important a good police department is to a small community.    Thanks to all for putting up with me on Sat. night. God bless all in uniform, including our dedicated members of the military.  God bless our troops.

I have returned!  Made it safely out of Florida and although I did not find the long lost Elin Woods or secure a bronzed, brown tan, I’m now pleasantly pink, about the same color as Pepto-Bismal (what a picture there, huh?). Had a great vacation as I toured the coasts of the Sunshine State.  Began on the westside in Naples Fla. visiting my friends Mae and Tom Dow, along with Liz and Mike Ellis and caught up with a bunch of Rochestarians who were also there on vacay.  Turns out Naples is a hotbed for people from here to escape to.  There is even an Abbott’s Frozen Custard stand on the main drag of Naples! Funny how the cold can still make it from Roch to Fla. via Abbotts. After a couple of grand days running the beach and soaking up the sun, my good chum Pat McKenna took me through Alligator Alley (where ironically we never once spotted an alligator so I could get new shoes)  I ended up in Hollywood.  Beach, that is, a cool old school beachtown on the east coast of Fla.  There, I chilled and took in the laid back lifestyle of the natives.  I did need to pick up the pace a bit and headed for a sweet tour of South Beach and Miami where I enjoyed the hospitality of Luis Aloma, the GM of the Hyatt Hotel on the Miami River.  Luis was the award-winning GM here in Roch. at the Hyatt Regency before returning to his native So. Fla. roots.  Got to take in the epic Olympic Gold Hockey match between Team USA and Canada poolside at the legendary Clevelander on South Beach.  The only way to describe this luxe joint is FREAK SHOW!  It was madness, and I loved every second of the Florida tour.  Check out what I mean at www.clevelander.com.

Got home to get the great news that our hero RPD Officer Tony DiPonzio is up for another well-deserved award. Help Tony win!   Voting for the Americas Most Wanted week #2 Allstar Award has been completed.  Officer Anthony Diponzio has been selected as the week #2 finalist!!!  As a result he will be one of the 8 finalist for the 2010 Allstar Award!!!  The film crew will be in Rochester filming and Tony will be profiled on AMW this Saturday night, 9pm on Fox.Voting starts for the Grand Prize Winner on April 15th at www.amw.com/allstar.  God bless Tony and, I’m glad to be back to write God bless our troops.

If you didn’t catch Tiger’s 14 minute statement to the world, check the podcasts here on our site and judge for yourself.  Quite a staged, controlled PR event.  All I can say is that in the interest of helping humanity, I am off to Florida to assist his wife Elin in her recovery. While Tiger goes back to rehab (must be a “Buddhist thing”) I will attempt to console his (current) bride and help her through the recovery. It’s the least I can do, again as a humanitarian.  This may take awhile, so don’t expect any updates here for about 10 days. These things take time, ya know?  And, as Elin’s cheating (current) husband said, this is a matter between us, so please allow us some privacy, ok? No paparazzi stalking us (hear that TMZ?), no visitors or friends just “stopping by” Elin’s mansion to see how we’re doing.  Please respect us during this difficult time (for her). I will do as much as Elin asks to help her through a rough, emotional time. Think about it.  Have you ever been cheated on? I have. It sucks.  You feel used and violated.  I know what she feels and will help in anyway imaginable.  I’m sure I can suggest some things for Elin’s imagination to ease the pain. So, off I go to crappy ol’ boring Fla. to the rescue.  Thank for the support.  Talk to you as soon as I can get clearance.

On a much more serious note, we lost more troops during the fight in Afghanistan yesterday.  These are the people who should be seeking our support, not rich, pampered golfers who wander from their family.  Please keep our men and women of the military in your prayers. God bless our troops.

I am not a big fan of the Olympics. It’s tough to get energized over events that I have no passion or interest in.  So, I have not been glued to the tube watching all of the spectacle from Vancouver, although it looks like a beautiful area and a great city. But of course I have some thoughts to share regarding the Olympics:

>> Lindsey Vonn is hot!  Not only as a gold medal winner in downhill skiing.  I know she’s married, but apparently her hubby/coach doesn’t mind if we look, cuz she has her gold medal bod poppin’ out in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.  A medal well deserved.

>> What is up with those costumes on the men’s figure skaters?  Talk about flamin’?  Fur, feathers, sequins?  Looks like a wild night out at Mothers or Nasty D’s downtown.

>> and while we’re talking about flamin’, did you witness the Olympic cauldron debacle during the opening ceremonies?  Long story short, one of the 4 prongs on the gigantic cauldron malfunctioned, leaving Wayne Gretzky hopelessly standing with the torch in his hand, awaiting his next instructions.  Nobody makes The Great One wait!  Needless to say, it was an embarrassment to the organizers who put billions into pulling off the perfect opening for the Games.  Oh well, the Games went on, begging the question: do we really need to blow so much money on a spectacle that has nothing to do with the actual competition?  Sorry, didn’t mean to rain on the parade.  And speaking of rain, where’s all the cold and snow up there in British Columbia? Temps have been in the 50’s for a significant portion of the Games, cancelling events and creating less than ideal conditions. I don’t remember such problems when the Olympics were held in Lake Placid here in our wonderful state.

>> I do give credit to all the athletes who have devoted so much time and effort into training for what can turn into a short snapshot, a mere moment that can change their entire life. And it can all go wrong instantly, as witnessed by the horrible death of the luge contestant from Georgia.  Much sacrifice goes into those seconds of do-or-die.  And the effort should be appreciated.  Much like how we should appreciate what our troops are doing for us, especially at this very second while the battle in Afghanistan continues.  Our heroes do not seek medals, fame or recognition.  They carry on the fight so we can enjoy the freedom of playing and watching games.  God bless our troops.

What a horrific tragedy in Greece Sat. night with the shooting of poor 7-year-old Hunter Resch.  By his own father.  What gives?  I have plenty of friends who have endured brutal breakups and divorces, but to take it out on your own child?  There is no explanation for such insanity. A little innocent kid, watching TV in what is supposed to be a safe haven from the wrongs of the world, and his dad  shoots him.  Evil. Madness. Nasty.  Brutal. Alarming. Disgusting.  Just some of the words to describe such an unspeakable thing.  Hunter was known as “The Mayor” of Paddy Hill school, a sweet popular scout.  So I dedicate today’s blog to my fellow politician of the hallways. You know the pearly white gates of Heaven were immediately opened for him.  I did not know his father or can explain why in his distraught mind he would pull the trigger on his own flesh and blood to spite his ex.  You gotta guess he has an EZ Pass to hell for such a crime on humanity. God bless the memory of innocent little Hunter and God bless our troops, who continue the fight against such evil.

Was lucky enough to be invited to the Syracuse basketball game last night at the Dome against Connecticut.  SU won 72-67 in front of 24,600 of us up on the chilled hill.  I am a long suffering fan of Notre Dame and usually cheer against the Orange. Nothing against SU, it’s just that they play in the Big East with my Irish so I have to follow my heart.  However, I find myself cheering this season for Syracuse because I really like this team. They play as a t-e-a-m and are very unselfish, especially compared to some former SU teams. Nobody tries to be the hero, they all just play well together.  Even when they struggled last night with their guard Andy Rautens on the bench in foul trouble, they still played well enough to win against an arch-rival. I have a solid feeling that the ‘Cuse is heading for the Final Four in the NCAA tourney in March and April.  There appears to be something special brewing down the Thruway. My thanks to Steve Martin from Canandaigua National Bank who invited me to join him along with John Parkhurst from the RBTL and Kevin Flynn from Martino Flynn Advertising. It was a great group to share a game with. Pre-game we went to a wonderful restaurant in Syracuse called Phoebe’s, where the food and company was stellar. Our waitress Carrie informed us that Phoebe’s was a brothel many years ago and Phoebe was the lead madam for the joint in it’s heyday. All this conversation was enlightening for my nephew Dylan, a freshman at SU who joined us for a very entertaining night in the Salt City.  I highly recommend Phoebe’s for any of our Buzz listeners in the ‘Cuse.  And by the way, for those of you who have been asking, my man Dylan is doing very well in school at SU. I’m really proud of how he’s doing after a very rough stretch to start the year personally. God bless Dylan and God bless our troops.

>> Saints fans, who have waited forever to win the big one.  Bills fans can relate.

>> Chief Todd Baxter of the Greece Police Dept.  The right man/the right time/the right job.

>> Greece Police Officers, who deserve a great Chief who will restore the pride in the badge in the GPD.  Many good people work there and they are in good hands with not only Chief Baxter but also… .

>> Deputy Chief Brian Urmacher, who was Chief Baxter’s first appointment on the job. Dep. Chief Urmacher held the GPD together during their toughest days and has won the respect of all in the community.  Another good man who deserves the job.

>> Betty White and Abe Vigoda. Good to see the ol’ geezers still kickin’ in the Snickers ad on TV’s biggest stage.

>> our fine military who are winning the war.  They’ve done a commendable job dealing with harsh situations. God bless our troops.

Lots of winter action to enjoy this weekend, all leading up to the Big Game Sunday.  I can’t legally write the actual trademarked name of this football extravaganza that is being played in Miami because the NFL will sue my poor ass, and since the economy and stock market are in the toilet, don’t want to lose any more $.  So, I’ll take the team from Indy (can I legally write Colts?) and predict a big party on the North Coast of America.  And since the Psychic Festival is in town at the Holiday Inn on Jeff. Rd. this wknd., I also can see a day off in my future Monday.  I am feeling a strong power washing over me that says I will stay up late Sun. night watching Peyton Manning directing his team (rhymes with bolts) to his second Big Game win, and I will need extra beauty sleep Mon. morning so I’m feeling……let’s see…a day off for yours truly Mon.  So, if you want to bet anything, bet the house you won’t hear my dulcid tones on the Buzz Mon. morning.

Here’s some great ideas for the Big wknd.:

>> Professional ISOC Sno-cross races at Finger Lakes Gaming and Race Track on Rt. 96 Fri. – Sun.  Rev those sleds under the lights.

>> Unprofessional pond hockey in Fairport at the Labatt Blue Canal Cup Tournament Fri. – Sun.  Keep an eye for Pat The Producer from the Breakfast Buzz, along with my college hockey buds from Geneseo Rick Altier, Jeff Stitt and Keith Hyde as they lace ‘em up on the canal. Those boys need to take a good shot to the head to knock some sense into them.

>> If you want to look deeply into the future, check out the psychics in Henrietta at the Holiday Inn.  Ask any of the 10 pros if I will be at work on Mon.

>> Our bud Mitch from the C&S Saloon in Brockport is hosting a fundraiser Sat. from 7p to midnight to raise cash for the 10-year-old son of Steve Nobles, who owns the coffee shop on Main St. in downtown B’port. Stop by and help the cause if you’re on the westside.

>> And on Sat. I’ll be the MC/PA announcer for the Canandaigua alumni basketball game at the high school at 6pm. Nothing like watching a bunch of over-weight old guys running around in tight shorts for entertainment, still livin’ the dream.  After I toss my cookies from that carnage, I’ll shoot into the city to watch the Razorsharks win their 100th franchise victory at 7:35 at the Blue Cross Arena. The Harlem Globetrotters kick off the day of hoops at the BCA at 2pm. Intersting geek fact: Coach Rod Baker has coached both the Trotters and Sharks, and should grab his 100th career win as the Roch. coach Sat. night.  A great achievement for a very good guy and a great coach! God bless Rod for his many years of basketball knowledge and God bless our troops.

Wouldn’t it be nice if your boss said that to you today at work?  “Hey, how about a bonus? I know you’ve done a terrible job and lost us millions of dollars, but I think you deserve to be rewarded for it. What do ya say? Take a big chunk of cash even though you did nothing to warrent this payday. Hey, who cares? It’s not our money anyways. It’s those suckers known as “taxpayers”! Ha!  Joke’s on them! Suckers!!!!”  I might be paraphrasing, but that is what could be goin’ down at AIG today.  You remember AIG, right? They are the geniuses who started the whole financial mess that we’ve been stuck with over the last 18 months.  They fumbled and bumbled their way through billions of dollars in bad investments, only to be bailed out in the end by the federal government.  Now, the word is out that AIG is handing out $100,000,000 in bonuses.  If you couldn’t figure that out with all the 000’s, that’s a cool $100 MILLION.  For doing a terrible job. Wouldn’t it be great to have a job like that? No matter how bad you do, or how much risk you take or money you lose, you get a bonus a year later. Sweet!  Sign me up! But do it today so I can get a chunk of the bonus loot too, ok?

Watched the pictures on the tube from yesterday’s heart-wrenching funeral for USMC Lance Corporal Zach Smith from Hornell.  By all accounts this 19-year-old was special. Everybody in Hornell loved him, from his classmates at HHS to his old high school football coach, to little old ladies on the street who he helped at Wegmans. It’s a shame to lose somebody who was so young and vibrant and overall a great person.  God bless Zach’s memory and all who volunteer like him to serve our country. God bless our troops.
