Holy Crush

Posted in: WTF

Stampede in India Kills at Least 147 Pilgrims
NY Times:
NEW DELHI — A religious festival in northern India turned into a horrific deadly crush on Tuesday as thousands of Hindu pilgrims stampeded at a temple shrine, piling into each other on a treacherous walkway slick with spilled coconut milk. Officials said at least 147 people, mostly men, suffocated.

WHAT?

I’m sure this really happened, but it doesn’t seem real to me because I have nothing to compare it to in my world.  I mean, what’s the equivalent?

Ok, maybe a sale on Playstations at Walmart the day after Thanksgiving?

Nope.  That always ends in a stabbing.

Plus…that’s not really a religious event.

I mean, when is the last time you heard about 147 people ending up dead on their way to church?

That’s it!

Have you ever noticed that whenever you see a story about a chartered bus driving off a cliff and bursting into flames…it’s a church group going on a trip?

I have the answer…Christians, STAY OFF THE THRUWAY!

Another problem solved by Dem Jones.  You’re welcome!

I got this through the message board earlier today and liked it… but didn’t want to use space on the board…

Sub: Broke Republican

Pat….any republican that can honestly say the bailout plan was not the most socialistic thing to ever hit Washington in 50 years in not being truthful to themselves. Any conservative who can’t see George Bush broke the country by spending does not know what the word “conservative” means. The strange part of it all is the word “liberal”. Real conservatives believe they will become gay just by mentioning the word. Funny how the “n” word is so free spoken amongst them……JD

Your first point: the Republicans are so broken that they forgot there own beliefs and the reasons why they are Republicans and more importantly, economic conservatives (There is a diffrence, not all Republicans are conservatives). Republicans, whether conservative, liberal, or moderate, believe beyond a shadow of a doubt two things: less government control and influencve and more State’s rights.  We’ve seen the complete opposite from President Bush who’s been trying to outlaw abortion for 8 years on the fedweral level and gives states a hard time about allowing for gay marriage. The proper answer from him shouldn’t be to allow or disallow either of these examples, but rather let each state make iut’s own judgment. If a vast majority show that they feel one way on these or any issues, then you talk about making it a nationwide federal law.

That being said, I’m proud of the Repubicans today for standing up to this rediculous bailoiut plan that wasn’t strict enough from the get go.  You have to have STRICT regulation of Wall Street at this point if you want to avoid this from happening again, and you ahve to have strict regulation because we, as Americans, are simply idiots when it comes to borrowing and spending.

I want to hit something about the debate on Friday: McCain likes the classic Republican idea that tax returns will solve a lot of our personal financial problems. Under his plan, assuming it would ever go into play, he wants to give back every American $5000 or so based on the assumption the original bailout would work. That looks good on  papoer and I’d like to sit here and pretend it’s the responsible thing to do, but it’s not unless we also regulate. When everyone got their $600 from the government this year a good chunk of us spent it one debt, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy those debts and a good chunk of us bought crap like TVs made by Japanese companies. $5k is a nice shiny number and everyone deserves it, but for a whole loot fo you it won’t pay your credit card bills off. Let’s say you have $10k of credfit debt that you can only make minimum payments on. You get $5k from the givernment down the road and use it all on your credit card debt. Great! However you still can only pay the minimum payments on what is left over. In oher words, your in less debt technically, but your day to day avaiable money is still the same as well as your 25% interest rate. Giving money back looks pretty, but doesn’t work for a lot of people.

I like Obama here, because he would rather regulat enot onloy CEO’s but alos the system itself. That sounds socialist to some but there is a difference between control and regulation. I still say you give people McCain’s $5k but with that you find away to limit CEO’s from gutting the system like they have by either capping their earnings with percentages or by having rules that a board of directors of a company and the CEO must follow strictly. See this is what amazes me… if you’re a private company then you’r enot owned by the common person… do as you please. If you’re a public company and areoned by someone like myself, who invests in your company because I believe in it and want to make money with you by investing in it, how can a board of directors be allowed to take advantage of me? Not enough rules.

Don’t worry kids… everything is going to be OK, but you all best buckle down and stop spending today.

Back to the message post… when it comes to your comment about language I say bravo lol. Stupid rednecks.

As Green Day said so eloquently….”wake me up when September ends”.  Not much sleep for your’s truly in the last few days.  Hope your weekend was as fun as mine.  Friday night I returned to my alma mater Geneseo State for homecoming weekend.  With former Omega Prez. Jason George by my side, we toured the town and caught up with lots of legendary grads.  Whether it was the Wale family reunion at the Idle Hour, the Phi Lamb contigent led by Mary Sue and Patty at Club 41, or the the hundreds of crazies who took over the IB, we had a blast wherever we ended up.  There’s nothing like catching up with people who helped to shape great memories from our time in Geneseo, like my buddy Ira Shinski.  Ira now is a highly successful fed in NYC and hasn’t been on campus in many years.  We shared many laughs, memories and a few Coors Lights over the weekend.  All of the local legends were represented as well, led by Tammy and Leo Chicelli, Ray Walker, Doc Kiara, Mark Tilgis, Neal Moynihan, Frank Adoninno, Charlie and Tom Basher….I could go on and on with all the great folks I had the pleasure to hang with.  Nothing like gettin’ back to the roots!  And the best part: no arrests or injuries sustained by the team.

Saturday it was back to the city for a birthday celebration honoring the BGB, The Battling George Brothers.  Jason and Bryon hit 27, and it certainly called for a grand dinner and a few celebratory drinks.  Those Georges from Seneca Castle can rev it up when they feel obliged.

Sunday it was a tour towards Naples for a party hosted by my confidants Mae and Tom Dow for non-stop football action at the Vine.  We were joined by an elite group, led by Jennifer Johnson from News10NBC and Leah George from R News.  Not only are these ladies beautiful and successful, but both are well versed in football knowledge. Jennifer is a life long Patriots fan while Leah is a devout Giants fan.  Gee, who played in the Super Bowl last year?  I guess these ladies know their stuff.  JJ was escorted by her hubby Honorable County Legislator Vincent Espostio, who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Patty and Kevin LeGrett, Grant, David, Richard and his bro-in-law Mikey who made a special appearance from Naples Fla.  (he must have got confused with his choice of Naples venues to attend for the weekend).  Overall, with the Bills victorious for week 4, it was a hugely successful day on the south end of Canandaigua Lake.  Thanks to Maesy and The Hammer for the wonderful hospitality.

So, here we stand in the final moments of September.  I’ve got to admit it’s been a hell of a month.  Enjoyable in many ways and many towns.  With October comes falling leaves, apples, cider, pumpkins and the climax to the endless campaign season.  Bring it on, and bring peace to our soldiers.  God bless our troops.

I saw this on 10NBC’s site today…

You can get the whole story by CLICKING HERE…

I LOVE this logo. It’s an awesome retro look that takes the Rochester community back to its roots….   Plus, as much as I love Wegman’s, the current logo feels lifeless.

Question though: does this mean the outside of the stores could be re-modeled too? By that I mean  not just the logo but the entire thing.

Grapes, grapes, grapes!  The Naples Grape Festival is this weekend down on route 21.  Everywhere you look you’ll find grapes….pies, candy, grape filled bars, wine.  It runs from 10a-5p Sat. and Sun.  If you’re thirsty for something other than wine, stop by the Orange Inn downtown and have a sip.  The only drawback to the Fest is that there’s basically only one way in and out on Rt. 21.  So, plan to take your time and enjoy the view.  The colors should be changing along the trip south of Canandaigua Lake.

If you’re into fire trucks and parades, the Sea Breeze Fire Dept. is celebrating it’s 100th Anniversary Sat. with a parade up Culver Rd. to the lake.  24 area depts. will be represented with lots of flashing red lights on the route.  If you’re thirsty, stop by Shamrock Jacks next to Seabreeze and say hi to Mark and Mike.  If you’re hungry for great italian chow, try Nick’s Seabreeze Inn across the street.

If you’re a Dave Matthews Band fan, a Dave tribute band Big Eyed Phish will be playing at the opening of Park Point off Jefferson Rd. @ RIT Sat. afternoon beginning at 5:30.  Buddahood will also be part of the party.

Great high school football matchups this weekend, including Pittsford @ Hilton tonight @ 7.  Both teams are unbeaten, as is East High hosting Marshall Sat. afternoon @1p.  Of course all of us happy Bills fans will be cheering as Buffalo stomps on the St. Louis Rams this wknd. in St. Louie.

I’m off to Homecoming @ Geneseo St. tonight. Look for me on the prowl at the IB, Club 41 and the Idle Hour.  All my rowdy friends will descend back on G-town.  Hope the town is ready…..

Attended a family picnic for Senator Joe Robach’s re-election campaign last night in Greece.  Joe is the man.  I hope you will join me in supporting our hard working State Senator.  No one fights harder for Rochester than Sen. Robach.   And while we’re on politics, John McCain has decided to join the presidential debate tonight with Barack Obama.  I just hope they both agree how brave our soldiers are, no matter what your feeling is towards the war.  God bless our troops!

If you listen to my show everyday on the Buzz, you have already correctly figured out that I have the easiest job in Section 5, and maybe possibly the world.   The fine folks at the Seneca Park Zoo could release a monkey, throw him on a RTS bus with a buck, send him south on St. Paul St. aimed towards High Falls, walk him into our beautiful studios, and the chimp could pull this job off.  Since I realize how fortunate I am to be doing something I love for a “career”, and know how easy my job is, I have all the respect in the world for people who work their butt off everyday.  People like Vinny Russo from Oak Hill Cleaning Service in East Rochester.  Vinny called me yesterday on the air here at the Buzz (you may have heard him as The Mayor’s Last Call of the Day @ 2:45 on 9/24/08).  Vinny was listening to the Buzz while working.  After speaking with him on air, I decided to hire him to come to my house to power wash it, clean the windows, clean the gutters, etc….you know, the typical stuff to get mi casa ready for what’s coming soon weatherwise.  Luckily he had an opening in his schedule for today, so Vinny and I made the plan for him to meet me at my house this morning.  Even though he was AN HOUR EARLY and scared the bijeebers out of me, I recognized his work ethic is amazing.  Here was this ”mature” (I won’t say older) man climbing my roof, working his ass off for his hard earned money.  Watching Vinny work made me appreciate not only how good I have it, but also what a hard working immigrant he is. He got more done today at my house than I’ll do this month.  Guys like him are the backbone of America.  He goes to work (early!) everyday to make a modest income, while keeping people like me happy.  His body takes a beating to keep the economy flowing, and Lord knows we all need that now.  I truly admire and respect people like Vinny.  If you ever need his services, call Oak Hill at 381-0531.  By the way, he didn’t pay me to do this, I paid him to get the job done…in fact, he has no idea I’m writing this now.  When his school bus shows up at your house or business (early!), you can trust me that Vinny will do a great job.  You can ask Mario, Anthony or Danny Daniele at their restaurants about Vinny.  They’re the ones who introduced me to Vinchenzo, and I’m glad they did.

God bless my italian cugino Vinchenzo and God bless our hard working troops!

Time Waster

Posted in: Web Stuff

It’s been around for a while, but I thought I would share one of my favorite little time wasters with you.  I’m warning you. Once you try this stupid game, you’ll find yourself skipping breakfast to fit in a quick round of Desktop Tower Defense.
